Conservation of biodiversity via both conservation of ecosystems and
species protection - this complex approach is used in nature conservation
projects of Protected Areas Group. The Group consists of permanent and
temporal staff of botanists, geologists, zoologists, hydrologists, soil
During its work the Protected Areas Group
- made a survey of 56 protected areas of the Leningrad region;
- prepared 14 project proposals of regional sanctuaries and natural
- prepared project proposal of the strict nature reserve "Ingermanlandsky";
- set a background and published three volumes of the Red Data Book of
Nature of the Leningrad Region and the Red Data Book of Nature of St.
The results of the work were reflected in the Leningrad Regional
Government Resolution Ή 494 of 26.12.1996 on the establishing of a network
of the Protected Areas in the Leningrad region. According to the Leningrad
Regional Government Resolution Ή 315 of 27.12.2004 "The Red Data Book of
Nature of the Leningrad Region" got the status of the official document.
Therefore the protected areas, species of animals and plants listed in the
Red Data Book got the official protected status.
