PROJECTS

MAIN PROJECTS IN THE LAST DECADE IN ORNITHOLOGY

Basic projects funded by the Federal Agency for Education:

1. Variability of the annual cycle in the model species populations (1995 - 1999).
2. Migratory behaviour, reproductive strategies and dynamics of numbers in birds species with "escape migrations" (1996 - 1998).
3. Ecological problems of bird migration in eastern Baltic region (1997 - 1999).
4. Adaptive variability of seasonal events of the annual cycle of bird species with different types of territorial behaviour (2000 - 2004).
5. Control of bird annual cycle by external factors (2005 - 2009).

Other grants and projects

1. Ecology, Migratory Behaviour and Molecular Genetics of Bird Population (1995 - 1999) INTAS program grant.
2. Biomonitoring (Monitor studies at the Ladoga ornithological station, 1996 - 1999) - "Forecast" program of High School Committee.
3. Study of the status and trends of migratory bird populations in Russia (1997 - 2001) - OMPO (Migratory Birds of Western Palearctic) grant.
4. Ornithofauna of "Lakes Rakovyye" protected area (1999 - 2001) - Finnish Ministry of the Environment grant.
5. Study of distribution and numbers of white-backed woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos at the Karelian Isthmus (2001) - in co-operation with Forest and Park Service, Finland.
6. Study of migration and mass congregations of birds in northwest Russia (2002) - Finnish Ministry of the Environment grant.
7. "Regulation of annual cycle and dynamics of numbers in invasion bird species" (2004 - 2006) - Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) grant No 04-04-48998.
8. Study of bird migration on proposed protected areas: Ingermanlandsky State Reserve, Prigranichny and Gogland Island protected areas (2005) - Government of the Leningrad Region grant.

GRANTS ON NATURE CONSERVATION

Within the Russian-Finnish co-operation (1998 - 2004) in conservation of biodiversity and nature in the Leningrad Region and St. Petersburg
- comprehensive nature investigations were carried out in 20 areas, and 12 proposals of PAs at the Karelian Isthmus were developed;
- an inventory of 12 PAs existing at the Karelian Isthmus and of the nature park "Vepssky Forest" was drawn up;
- the Neva Bay was examined in order to establish a wetland of international importance (Ramsar Site);
- the points of mass congregations of migratory birds were revealed on Lake Ladoga and the Gulf of Finland in order to protect them;
- the old-growth forests in the south-east of the Leningrad Region and at the Karelian Isthmus were explored;
- six books on the nature of the Leningrad Region were published: the "Red Data Book of Nature of Saint-Petersburg", "Protected nature of Saint-Petersburg", 3 volumes of the "Red Data Book of Nature of the Leningrad Region", the "Protected Nature of the Karelian Isthmus";
- the book "Lakes Rakovyye - the pearl of the Karelian Isthmus" is prepared to be published.

The Government of the Leningrad Region sponsored several grants and projects concerning nature conservation. The most important of them are:
1. "Survey-and-development works on project of the sanctuary "Southern Priladozhye" (1998-2001),
2. "Analysis of natural complexes and estimation of how the economic activities match the conservation of biodiversity tasks in the sanctuaries "Viborgsky" and Beryoezovyye Islands" (1999 - 2001)
3. "Analysis of natural complexes and estimation of how the economic activities match the conservation of biodiversity tasks in the sanctuaries of the Gatchinsky district" (2003).
4. "Analysis of natural complexes and estimation of how the economic activities match the conservation of biodiversity tasks in the six sanctuaries of the Luzhsky district" (2004).
5. "GAP-analysis in the Leningrad region" (2004-2005).
6. "Analysis of natural complexes and estimation of how the economic activities match the conservation of biodiversity tasks in the complex natural monument "River Ragusha" (2005).
7. "Management of the PAs "Lebyazhy" (2006).
